Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay launch bid to host 2030 World Cup

Cup in the neighborhood? The governments and football federations of Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay launched this Tuesday (7), in Buenos Aires, the countries' official joint candidacy to host the 2030 World Cup, the centenary year of the first edition of the tournament. ⚽

“We are convinced that FIFA has an obligation to honor the memory of those who organized the first World Cup,” said the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, in an event at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) building.

Uruguay was the host and champion of the first World cup, held in 1930, with a 4-2 victory in the final over Argentina, champion of the last edition of the tournament, in 2022.

South Americans will compete for the organization of the 2030 World with the joint candidacy of Spain and Portugal (with Ukraine as a guest); that of Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Greece; and Morocco.

“It’s very important that they come and play here. Uruguay is the first world champion, Argentina the last. Confederations in the world have grown” since that World Cup, said Sebastián Bauzá, Uruguayan Sports Secretary.

For the Minister of Sports of Paraguay, Diego Galeano Harrison, “the 100th anniversary World Cup” should be held in South America.

“It is a legitimate demand for the region. We have world champions. It's a big challenge. First, it is dreaming, believing and achieving, with a clean and sustainable candidacy”, said Alexandra Benado, Minister of Sports of Chile.

In turn, the president of AFA, Claudio Tapia, is confident that “history and passion will give us the possibility of being the headquarters of 2030”.

An unfavorable point for South Americans is that the next World cup, in 2026, will already be played in America, with the United States, Mexico and Canada as hosts.

In the next edition, the number of tournament participants will increase from 32 to 48, starting from the group stage.

South America has already organized the World cup on five occasions: Uruguay-1930, Brazil-1950, Chile-1962, Argentina-1978 and Brazil-2014.
