The fury of Cyclone Freddy: more than 240 dead in Malawi and Mozambique

Malawian authorities are racing against time to rescue survivors of the cyclone that devastated the region, after leaving a trail of death and destruction also in Mozambique. Freddy left southern Africa at the end of February and returned at the beginning of March, causing 21 deaths in Mozambique and at least 245 in Malawi so far. In the latter, there are 41 missing and around 700 injured.

Rescue teams are in a hurry, but search operations for bodies and attempts to rescue trapped people are hampered by mud and weather conditions in Malawi. “Floods are the biggest problem,” said Felix Washon, Red Cross spokesman in the country.

“The destruction is enormous, it is a challenge to reach the people trapped with the destroyed bridges and high water levels,” he added. According to him, emergency teams rescued people stranded in trees and rooftops.

Almost 59.000 people were affected by the cyclone and 20.000 are homeless.

In recent days, torrential rains have caused deadly floods and landslides, although the storms gave way on Wednesday morning.

On Monday, in the community of Chilobwe, families and rescuers dug through the mud, sometimes with their hands, looking for a family member or at least their bodies. “There are dead everywhere (…), everyone has lost someone”, lamented Fadila Njolomole, 19 years old.
