Accused of sexual abuse, gymnastics coach is sentenced to 109 years in prison

Former gymnastics coach Fernando de Carvalho Lopes was found guilty of sexual abuse of gymnasts by the 2nd Criminal Court of São Bernardo do Campo. The case was revealed in 2018 by “Fantástico”. The decision was published on Monday (03).

The former coach was sentenced in the first instance to 109 years and 8 months in a closed regime, for the crime of rape of a vulnerable person against four victims. Fernando will appeal freely and the decision can still be appealed.

Remember the case:

• The first victim in the process was just 13 years old. In 2016, she contacted her parents to talk about inappropriate behavior by the gymnastics coach at the traditional Clube Mesc, in São Bernardo do Campo.
• Another seven people went to the police station for the defense of women and adolescents to testify, including victims and witnesses.
• The case was held up for two years.
• A Fantástico report in 2018 showed that more than 40 gymnasts revealed that they had suffered abuse committed by the former coach between 1999 and 2016.
• Only four are named in the lawsuit as victims.
• The other athletes who claim to have suffered abuse participate in the police investigation as witnesses.
