ANALYSIS: History shows that coup ambitions should not be underestimated

The events of this Wednesday (26) made it clear that the entire farce put together by those around Jair Bolsonaro on radio stations in the Northeast is nothing more than an attempt to discredit the electoral process and justify an attempt to postpone the elections. This movement has a name: coup. And whoever supports it is a scammer.

But these developments should not be surprising. It has been clear for a long time that Bolsonaro does not respect republican principles and may try to subvert them. The quick clarification of this radio farce will not be enough to stop the coup DNA of Bolsonarism.

But what is worrying is a tendency - in the press too - to underestimate the possibility of the coup prevailing. In recent years, we have been witnessing a gradual erosion of our democracy and there is no guarantee that it is still solid enough to withstand the obstacles that may come.

Have we lost sight of the danger? Yesterday, Bolsonaro, President of the Republic, summoned the heads of the Armed Forces to discuss an electoral issue, on which the Court had already expressed its opinion. An issue that is absolutely outside the military’s remit. On his way out, he gave an interview reaffirming his false accusations and attacking the judiciary. He also said that he will respect what the Constitution requires. But can this statement be taken seriously coming from the mouth of someone who has always disregarded democratic rules? Have we become a country of old ladies from Taubaté?

Our history and recent examples from other countries show that coup ambitions should not be underestimated. In defense of democracy, there is no room for hesitation.
