In a Brazil with institutions functioning as they should, the scandalous use of the State apparatus, promoted today by Jair Bolsonaro to boost his electoral campaign, would be more than enough for him to be prevented from running for re-election, as required by law.

But in Brazil, we are far from solid institutions that function to their fullest. In fact, this fragility has already prevailed for some time, because if legal rules were truly being respected, Bolsonaro would have long ago been prevented, by constitutional means, from staying in the Planalto Palace.
It even seems that the country is gradually anesthetizing its democratic defenses.
It remains to be seen whether what is left of our institutions will be enough to stop a Bolsonaro who, faced with a scenario of imminent risk of defeat at the polls, tries to break the precarious Brazilian democratic process once and for all.
