Bolsonaro raises flag with phrase 'Brazil without abortion' in parade

The President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), raised a flag with the phrase “Brazil without abortion” this Wednesday, 7th, while participating in the celebrations of the Bicentenary of the Country's Independence, on the Esplanada dos Ministérios. The head of the Executive received the flag from supporters as he watched the civic-military parade from the stands. Candidate for re-election, Bolsonaro uses his rejection of abortion to retain religious and conservative voters.

Bolsonaro watched the parade alongside First Lady Michelle, the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha (MDB), who is also running for a second term.

After a struggle between the head of the Executive and the governor, the DF Security Secretariat maintained the ban on trucks entering the Esplanada.

On the night of Monday, the 5th, a group of truck drivers tried to break through the blockade in the region, which led to the preventive closure of access to the Esplanada.

Without a public agenda, Lula celebrates September 7th online with a Brazilian anthem

In a video on social media with Brazilian flags and to the sound of the national anthem, PT's candidate for President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, celebrated September 7th, the date on which the country's 200th anniversary is celebrated.

“September 7th should be a day of love and unity for Brazil. Unfortunately, that is not what happens today. I have faith that Brazil will regain its flag, sovereignty and democracy. Good morning,” wrote Lula on Twitter.

The video uses patriotic symbols, such as the country's flag and the colors green and yellow – resources that were appropriated by supporters of the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

On Tuesday, Lula stated that the head of the Executive “usurped” the 7th of September “as if it were his”.

As Broadcast Político (Grupo Estado's real-time news system) showed, the former president, advised by allies, decided to remain at home this Wednesday and not promote a public agenda.

The idea is to avoid competition of strength with its main opponent, who is betting on September 7th to gain political leverage in pro-government demonstrations. (Estadão Conteúdo)

Amidst the celebrations of 200 years of Independence, this Wednesday, 7th, the candidate for President of the Republic Ciro Gomes (PDT) asked that, on this date, nothing and no one be able to steal the peace and freedom of the Brazilian people . For him, Brazil should celebrate its bicentennial by “living in better days” and criticizes “bad politics” as a gateway to current problems.

In a campaign piece, Ciro appears in a blue shirt to the sound of the National Anthem and with the Brazilian flag in the background.

If bad policy was, unfortunately, the gateway to the current problems, good policy is the only true exit to get rid of them,” he declares. “We have the deepest hope that we will find a new path together. And Brazil will fully realize its future as a free, fair and sovereign nation. To be a country the size of the faith and generous hearts of our people.”

  • Military parade with Bolsonaro begins tense Independence celebrations

President Jair Bolsonaro participated, this Wednesday (7), in the military parade in Brasília that began the celebrations of the bicentenary of Independence, under a climate of tension less than a month before the elections.

The president invited Brazilians to take to the streets and argued that “there is still time to go out, in green and yellow, to celebrate and celebrate the land where we live”, before the events begin on TV Brasil.

“What is at stake is our freedom, our future,” he added, in a veiled allusion to the October 2nd elections.

Last year, Independence Day was marked by pro-Bolsonaro demonstrations, with coup slogans and with the president swearing that “only God” could remove him from power.

Polls, however, show that he is behind former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the most polarized election in Brazil's recent history.

“September 7, 2022 happens at the peak of the campaign, in the final stretch of the campaign. So it will necessarily be politicized”, commented Paulo Baia, professor of political science at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, to AFP.

“We will have a tense September 7th, with possibilities of violence, as the day is being appropriated as part of the electoral campaign of all candidates, not just Jair Bolsonaro”, he pointed out.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin sent messages of congratulations to the Brazilian government on the bicentenary.

  • Rolls Royce with the First Lady –
Escorted by a tank, Bolsonaro arrived at the parade in the classic presidential Rolls Royce, with the presidential sash on his chest, and accompanied by the first lady, Michelle Bolsonaro, and several children.

The president and his wife smiled and greeted the public as they walked along the Esplanada dos Ministérios.

Bolsonaro then got out of the vehicle and continued on foot, greeting thousands of people who were following the military parade, which was joined by several tractors belonging to Bolsonaro supporters.

“Myth, myth!” shouted his followers.

The military parade, canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, took place under an exceptional security regime.

A demonstration in favor of Bolsonaro will begin later in Brasília, at 13 pm.

In the afternoon, attention will turn to Rio de Janeiro and Copacabana beach.

Traditionally, the military parade in Rio takes place about 15 km away, on Avenida Presidente Vargas, in the city center.

But the head of state insisted that this year the soldiers pass through the place where Bolsonarist demonstrations usually take place.

There will be no armored cars near the beach, but warships in the ocean and military planes in the sky, as well as paratroopers.

  • More moderate speech -Bolsonaro is expected to greet a crowd of motorcyclists who marked a mobilization in Copacabana, and will then speak to the protesters from a large platform rented by allied pastors.

Agribusiness magnates have also contributed financially to the organization of events in the country, according to the local press.

An intense campaign was carried out on social media to bring together as many protesters as possible, and Bolsonarist YouTubers launched requests for donations online.

“Jair Bolsonaro's campaign is preparing for a great show of strength in all Brazilian cities, especially in cities with more than 100.000 inhabitants. This demonstration of strength is meant to translate into votes, to retain voters, and to seduce voters from other smaller candidates”, commented Paulo Baia.

In order not to scare moderate voters, the head of state asked his most enthusiastic supporters to avoid banners and slogans demanding military intervention to close the Federal Supreme Court (STF), which opened several investigations against Bolsonaro, especially for spreading false information.

Bolsonaro has moderated his speech somewhat in recent weeks, although on Saturday he called STF judge Alexandre de Moraes, one of his favorite targets, “marginal”.

According to the latest survey by the Datafolha institute, released last week, Lula maintains a comfortable lead, with 45% of voting intentions, compared to Bolsonaro's 32%, although the difference has narrowed in recent weeks.

Now we will celebrate the bicentenary of Brazil's Independence (…) An independent nation presupposes respect for institutions and the free will of citizens, with compliance with the election result being an important value.questionble. The pride of being Brazilian should be celebrated! Our society is capable of deciding its own direction. Let’s continue writing our story”, states the message, displayed on the same website where the contributions for the first letter were gathered.

The message was prepared by the jurists involved in publishing the first letter: the counselors of the Court of Auditors of the State of São Paulo Dimas Ramalho and Roque Citadini; the prosecutor of the Public Ministry of Accounts Thiago Pinheiro Lima; the former attorney general of São Paulo Luiz Marrey; and federal judge Ricardo Nascimento.

Bolsonaristas on the Esplanada shout against Lula and curse the press

In a stance that exposes the political-electoral tone given to the September 7th celebrations, supporters of the President of the Republic and candidate for re-election, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), present at the Esplanada dos Ministérios to follow the civic-military parade sing the cry of order “Lula, thief, you belong in prison”, in reference to the Chief Executive’s main opponent in the election, and they offend the press. The space reserved for journalists is separated from the general public by a small fence.

The parade to mark the Bicentenary of Brazil's Independence will take place in front of the Ministry of Defense and will be accompanied by Bolsonaro, who will then speak in an electric trio installed in front of the National Congress and alongside war tanks.

Good morning. We have now reopened coverage of September 7th. Have a great holiday.

  • VOLTAGE: At Bolsonaro's request, truck drivers will be able to enter the Esplanada

In a turnaround in security restrictions on the eve of September 7th, Bolsonaro protesters were allowed to enter the Esplanada dos Ministérios with trucks, trailers and buses that are part of a caravan in Brasília. The area had been blocked by the Military Police to protect Praça dos Três Poderes, after the three-day occupation and attempts to attack the Federal Supreme Court and the National Congress last year.

On the night of Monday, the 5th, part of the caravan entered the central area of Brasília and, with a honk, headed towards the Esplanada, where President Jair Bolsonaro's campaign events and the official parade commemorating the Bicentenary of Brazil will take place. Independence, on the morning of this Wednesday, the 7th. The local security teams, who monitored the mobilization, were instructed to anticipate the blockade of the region and formed barricades with vehicles and concrete blocks.

Electoral ally of President Jair Bolsonaro, governor Ibaneis Rocha (MDB) confirmed to the Estadão the release of access on Tuesday night, the 6th. He confirmed that Bolsonaro participated in the negotiation to allow heavy vehicles to enter the Esplanada dos Ministérios. “Everything was agreed in advance with everyone,” said Ibaneis, who is a candidate for re-election with the support of the president, referring to Bolsonaro, members of the security areas of the federal government and the government of Brasília and the organizers of the Bolsonaro acts.

The Army was called to authorize the entry of Bolsonarist trucks. According to officials familiar with the negotiations, access for trucks was authorized on a section of the Eixo Monumental, close to the bus station. It was up to the Army soldiers to assist in the registration of vehicles and those responsible, to speed up partial release on the Esplanade.

According to active military personnel, access will be controlled and limited. Trucks will not be able to approach the ministries' headquarters and Praça dos Três Poderes. The authorization was for them to be parked, from midnight this Wednesday, in the area between the Brasília Cathedral and the Bus Station.

President Jair Bolsonaro himself will use trucks in an act of electoral bias. After calling on militants to send messages “for the last time” to the Supreme Court ministers, whom he called “deaf people in black capes”, Bolsonaro decided to speak in Brasília in an electric trio, which must be positioned close to the restricted area where the parade will take place. military.

The idea is that, soon after leaving the tribune of honor with the ceremony alongside foreign heads of state, Bolsonaro will move and climb into a sound car to speak to his supporters. The president used electoral propaganda to call for protesters. The campaign used the slogan “Jair ou Já era” to ask the president’s voters to participate. (Estadão Conteúdo)

Due to the wind, military paratroopers suffered an accident in Rio de Janeiro during rehearsal for demonstrations scheduled for September 7th. Among those involved was Air Force sub-officer Izaquiel Luis, who fell on the roof of a property and suffered serious injuries. The Fire Department reported that there were no fatalities.

Army soldiers are registering around 60 trucks to enter the Esplanade of Ministries on September 7th. Disallowing the order from district and national security forces, President Jair Bolsonaro sent the event organizers an order to release the vehicles. O governor of the Federal District rejected the measure: “No [truck] will come in. They will only enter if it is by act of force, which we will not allow.”

One day before September 7th, when acts of support for President Jair Bolsonaro are expected to take place, a new text in defense of the electoral system and democracy was released. The document was written by the organizers of the last letter that obtained more than 1 million signatures and is titled “Independence and Democracy”. Read the new letter in full on the website of the State of Law Always movement.

In relation to 2018 and the demonstrations on September 7, 2021, the 2022 edition had a “much smaller mobilization” of the forces linked to President Jair Bolsonaro in the social networks and in Telegram and WhatsApp groups. The assessment is by Jota columnist and digital consultant Iago Bolivar, who points to a “more traditional” organization that has replaced the role of organic engagements of supporters at the center of campaign strategy of Bolsonaro for presidential re-election.
