The Atlético de Madrid club condemned the racist insults made by its fans against Real Madrid's Brazilian striker Vinicius Junior, shortly before the derby between the teams last Sunday (19).

Emphasizing that the majority of the team's fans “supports your team with passion and respect for the opponent”, Atlético adds that “These chants provoke enormous repulsion and indignation”.

“We will not allow any individual to hide behind our colors to utter racist or xenophobic insults”, the note continues.

Shortly before the start of the game between Atlético and Real Madrid in the 6th round of the Spanish Championship, 'colchoneros' fans uttered racist chants against Vinicius Junior.

During the match, won by the Merengue team 2-1, the Brazilian was booed every time he picked up the ball.

Atlético also reported that it plans “the immediate expulsion” of the fans involved who are members of the club.

“We ask fans for sanity and rationality, but professionals from different areas generated an artificial campaign during the week, igniting the fuse of controversy without measuring the impact of their actions and demonstrations”, added the club.

Atlético appears to be referring to the statements made by Pedro Bravo, president of the Spanish Association of Football Agents (AEAF), when commenting on the Brazilian's celebrations on the field.

Although the agent apologized, his speech generated reactions in support of Vinicius from other players and personalities from Brazil and Real Madrid.

The player himself also released a message on his social networks against racism and xenophobia.
