Avalanche leaves at least 10 dead in northern Pakistan

At least 10 people died in an avalanche in an isolated region of northern Pakistan this Saturday (27), authorities said, saying that difficulties in accessing the area make rescue operations difficult.

The avalanche, which also injured ten people, occurred near the Shounter pass, which connects the Gilgit-Baltistan region with Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

“A group of about 35 nomads returning from Kashmir were camped near a ravine,” rescue service official Subah Jan told AFP.

“They were hit by an avalanche that occurred late at night and left at least ten people dead,” he added.

Authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan confirmed the death toll in a statement.

Some residents of the area are in charge of rescue operations due to difficulty accessing the area, police officer Muhamad Riaz told AFP.

Every year, the Bakarwal community travels with their herds in search of pasture and to escape harsh weather conditions.
