Federal base on Yanomami land is attacked by miners

Ibama reported on Thursday night (23) that the federal base located in the Palimiú village, in the Yanomami Indigenous Land, in Roraima, suffered attacks from miners in the early hours of Wednesday (22). After the attack, Ibama asked the Federal Police (PF) to send security reinforcements to the site. There was a shootout between police and miners. One was injured and arrested.

According to a report from Ibama, armed men broke through the blockade set up on the Uraricoera River – an attacked space serves to block the entry of clandestine vessels into the territory – and shot at agency agents who boarded one of the vessels. The inspectors retaliated and injured a miner – whose name was not disclosed. He was detained and taken to the hospital.

The criminals went down the river in seven boats called “voadeiras”, measuring 12 meters each, loaded with cassiterite, a metal widely exploited in the region.

The shipment was identified by drones operated by Ibama inspectors. After the attack, the criminals fled.

Security at the control base is provided by agents from the National Public Security Force, the Federal Highway Police and Ibama.

This week, the base was given a steel cable structure and, since then, according to Ibama, no loaded boats have gone towards the mines.

For the president of Ibama, Rodrigo Agostinho, this is a planned criminal attack. “Anyone who tries to break the blockade will be arrested. Ending illegal mining is President Lula’s determination,” he added.

In May 2021, a series of attacks by miners began in the Palimiú region, shooting with firearms and throwing gas bombs. The group of invaders he even shot at a PF team who went to help the Yanomami. The place has a population of around 1 thousand inhabitants.
