Bolsonarists call for military intervention after Lula’s victory

Thousands of Bolsonaro supporters gathered this Wednesday (2) in front of barracks to call for military intervention after Lula's victory at the polls last Sunday (30). Protests take place in São Paulo, Brasília and Rio de Janeiro.

In the city of São Paulo, followers of President Jair Bolsonaro gathered in front of the Southeast Military Command, close to Ibirapuera Park. Dozens of videos of the demonstrations are circulating on social media – including cries of “federal intervention now!” and requests for action from the Armed Forces.

“We want federal intervention because we demand our freedom. We do not allow a thief to rule us,” Ângela Cosac, 70, told AFP next to a poster that said “SOS Forças Armadas”.

Another demonstration by Bolsonarists was planned during the day on Avenida Paulista.

Acts were also recorded in other Brazilian cities:

  • Brasilia: protesters gathered in front of the Army headquarters and shouted “civil resistance”;
  • Rio de Janeiro: in the center of the capital, protesters shouted in the rain “Lula, thief, you belong in prison”.

Blockades across Brazil

Across the country, roadblocks and closures continued for the third consecutive day, but with a downward trend. This morning, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) recorded 167 roadblocks in 17 states. On Tuesday (1st), this number reached 271.
