Brazil, the land of skateboarding!

Skateboarding is Brazil's new favorite. In reality, it's not that new: the sport - which is even represented at the Olympic Games - has been revealing stars here for some time now! In November this year, Brazil will host the biggest street skate league championship. O Curto News tells you more about this and other types of sport.

In the past, skateboarding was heavily criticized and its fans were even marginalized, but nowadays it's POP! Brazil is very good at sports – yes, skateboarding is a sport – and several athletes were able to compete in the most recent Olympic Games, in Tokyo, last year. Skateboarding won the hearts of “everyone”, as they say.

Brazil is a world reference in sport. And it's not new, back then Bob Burnquist made history. Currently, Rayssa Leal – the little fairy – writes new pages about the sport and, from generation to generation, Brazil creates icons and reinforces the love for sport.

Where did it come from?

Skateboarding was born in the 50s, in California. It was like dry surfing: they started putting wheels on small surfboards, and “asphalt surfers” stole the show with their radical maneuvers.

In 1959 the first official skateboard was produced by Roller Derby. But it was only in the 90s that major competitions began to emerge. YOU "XGames” began at that time.

MODALITIES

There are three modes: Park, Street and Vert. The first two are in the Olympic Games. But there is no right or most appropriate modality:

  • The Park is more associated with American tracks – those that look like an empty swimming pool.
  • Street is street skateboarding, with handrails, boxes, stairs and obstacles along those lines.
  • Vert is the U-shaped flashing, where skateboarders spin and fly. It is used in XGames.

Skate is Pop

Bob Burnquist and Geninho Amaral were pioneers of skateboarding in Brazil, for men. Karen Jonz was also a pioneer of women's skateboarding in the country.

Today, we have new icons in the area, and the Curto News presents you with some of them:
