Brazil records fourth death from monkey smallpox; Monday in MG

The fourth case of death from monkeypox was recorded in Brazil, in Minas Gerais. The state has two deaths. The other two cases occurred in Rio de Janeiro, but São Paulo is the region with the highest incidence of the disease to date: 3.843. The City of Pouso Alegre (MG) reported on Sunday (9) the death of a 21-year-old boy, who had been hospitalized since September 11th. The other victims in the country were 31, 33 and 41 years old.

According to a bulletin released by the Ministry of Health on Friday (7), Brazil has 8.340 confirmed cases of monkeypox. Another 4.586 are being monitored.

São Paulo is the state with the highest number of cases (3.843), followed by Rio de Janeiro (1.120) and Minas Gerais (514). Known internationally as monkeypox, monkeypox is a disease caused by a virus and transmitted by close or intimate contact with an infected person with skin lesions.

Vaccine

The Ministry of Health received the first batch of monkeypox vaccines. The shipment – ​​with 9,8 units – arrived in São Paulo on the 4th. In total, Brazil purchased approximately 50 vaccines via the revolving fund of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

The next batches should be delivered by the end of 2022. According to guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO), initially, the immunizers will be used to carry out studies.
