Brazil had two cases of political violence per day during the campaign, NGOs estimate

Brazil recorded an average of almost two episodes of political violence per day in the two months before the first round of elections, on October 2, according to an NGO report, published this Tuesday (11). From August 1st to October 2nd, a total of 121 cases were registered, including homicides, attacks, threats or aggressions (physical or verbal).

O report, prepared by NGOs Global Justice and Land of Rights, takes into account violence against elected officials, candidates or other people performing political-related functions.

Furthermore, since the beginning of 2022, the number of episodes of violence has increased fivefold compared to 2018, the year of the previous election, when president, governors, senators, federal and state deputies were chosen.

This year, the report recorded 247 cases of political violence, including eight homicides, 23 attacks, 85 threats and 59 physical attacks.

“We have seen more attacks directed at left-wing or center-left parties, or at elected officials, withpromewith the defense of human rights, the LGTB+ community or the fight against racism”, explained Glaucia Marinho, from the NGO Justiça Global, cited in a press release.
