Brasilcore: trend lies between fashion and political symbolism

With the arrival of the World Cup, green and yellow are once again gaining prominence. The so-called 'brasilcore' has gone viral on social media in recent weeks - and the Curto explains what the trend is and its relationship with politics.

Brasilcore is a fashion trend that basically consists of dressing in the colors of the Brazilian flag. But did you know that it was actually foreign influencers who popularized the trend? TikTok and Instagram are full of posts featuring looks from users from the United States and Europe – and of course Brazilian influencers are also joining in.

Lilyan Berlin, PhD in social sciences and professor at ESPM, explains that “as the shirts were officially produced, copies almost immediately began, which were appropriated by those who could not afford them. What’s important there is the symbol.” The Brazilian team's shirt, therefore, became an item of desire.

In recent years, Brazil's shirt has become a political symbol and many people have stopped wearing it – especially after the polarization of the 2018 presidential elections. However, with the adoption of foreign influencers and the new collection for the 2022 World Cup, the The use of green and yellow became popular again.

“When this new collection arrives, its greatest importance is to arrive at a political moment that says 'this shirt belongs to everyone, this symbol belongs to everyone'. Wearing our national team’s shirt, which has the colors of our flag, which signifies our country”, reflects Lilyan.
