Truck found in Texas reignites debate about migration crisis in the United States

The number of people blocked at the United States border broke a record in 2021 and is expected to follow the same path this year. In May 2022 alone, there were 239 thousand seizures - an increase of 32% compared to the same period of the previous year. This data impacts the Biden government, which promeyours to reverse harsh illegal migration policies.

The bodies of 50 immigrants were found inside a truck on Monday (27) in the city of San Antonio (Texas), in the United States. The region is known as a route for people trying to enter the country illegally. According to the news agency Reuters, city authorities say this is one of the worst cases involving immigrants on the border between the United States and Mexico.

Other people were found alive inside the truck, some of whom were minors. All were taken to hospitals with symptoms of exhaustion and heatstroke, according to the Fire Department. The temperature in the city was around 40ºC when the vehicle was discovered, in the midst of a strong heat wave that has hit the United States.

Rising crisis

The accident in San Antonio once again raises the debate about the challenges of controlling the crisis of irregular immigration of foreigners to North American territory across the border with Mexico.

Joe Biden, President of the United States, took office in January 2021 promehaving reversed the harsh policies of his predecessor, Donald Trump, but the numbers have only grown since then.

During the Summit of the Americas held earlier this month, the United States and 19 other countries signed an agreement containing commitments to contain the migration crisis. The term, however, does not explore the structural issues of these processes.

Greg Abbott, governor of Texas, published a criticism of Biden on his Twitter profile. “At least 42 people were found dead inside a truck transporting immigrants in Texas. These deaths are in Biden's account. They are the result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law,” Abbott wrote.

During the year 2021, more than 2 million people were stopped at the borders from United States. This year should be no different, as the number of seizures has been growing since January. In May alone, the last record released, more than 239 thousand immigrants were blocked – an increase of 32% compared to the same period of the previous year.
