Campaign defends turning Pelé into an entry in the Portuguese language

The football king's nickname is popularly used in Brazil as a synonym for the best, the unparalleled, the excellence: "Today I have to be a Pelé!", "She is the Pelé of art" or "I made a Pelé move".

In order for the expression to be immortalized, in the land of the 'beautiful game', a campaign was launched with the aim of making the nickname Edson Arantes do Nascimento, who died last December at the age of 82, is included in Portuguese language dictionaries.

The idea of “Pele in the Dictionary” was launched jointly by Fundação Pelé, Santos and Grupo Globo’s Sportv sports channel to honor “the king” on the 111th anniversary of the São Paulo club, where he spent most of his career.

The objective of the initiative, which began on April 14, is “to make Pelé official in the Portuguese language as an adjective synonymous with exceptional, incomparable, unique”, they indicated in a statement.

To this end, they created a website where they hope to collect one hundred thousand signatures to “raise awareness among publishers” and get them to add to their publications the nickname of what many consider to be the best football player in history.

They even propose a definition of “Pelé” (“the best” and what it means to “be Pelé”: “1. Better than everyone else. 2. Reference of greatness. 3. Unparalleled. 4. Synonym of excellence. 5. “Unique”.

“We have already used his name to praise others, let's do this tribute to immortalize him in the dictionary”, said Santos' current '10', Venezuelan Yeferson Soteldo, in a promotional video.

For the creators of the campaign, there are at least five reasons why the three-time world champion player (1958, 1962, 1970) deserves to be included in Portuguese dictionaries.

Pelé is considered the greatest Brazilian of all time, he is a legend and has several records and titles, he is credited with stopping a war in Africa, and he has medals and achievements outside the football field.

With no deadline to raise support, the campaign coincides with other tributes taking place in South America four months after the death of the legendary number 10, as a result of cancer.

In the matches of the Brazilian Championship and the Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana, a minute of silence is held in honor of the name that internationalized Brazilian football and claimed to be the greatest scorer in history (1.283 goals).
