Soyuz capsule returns to Earth without crew, says Russian space agency

This Wednesday (11), Russia announced that its Soyuz capsule, currently attached to the International Space Station (ISS) and victim of a spectacular refrigerant leak last month, will return to Earth without a crew.

“Experts have concluded that Soyuz MS-22 must return to Earth without a crew,” declared the Russian space agency (Roscosmos) in a statement, confirming that the leak was caused by the “impact” of a small cosmic object that left a hole smaller than one millimeter in diameter.

Russia will send a Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station on February 20 to bring three astronauts to Earth, two Russians and one American, after the capsule that was supposed to transport them was damaged.

The Soyuz-23 capsule, which was scheduled to take off on March 16 with three crew members, “will be launched on February 20, 2023, without passengers,” the Russian space agency (Roscosmos) said in a statement.
