The party is considered a popular (and profane) celebration, surrounded by regional celebrations, costumes and exposed bodies. But to the surprise of some, the date is linked to a Catholic holiday, the Palm Sunday!

The definition of the days of carnival follows the calendar created by the Catholic Church. Which, in turn, follows the lunar calendar, the seasons and the date of Easter Holiday (holy holiday celebrating the resurrection of Christ).

Before explaining how dates are calculated, it is necessary to know what it is equinox, since the counting is done through it.

The equinox happens twice a year. On this occasion, day and night have the same length of 12 hours. The first takes place around March 20th. In September there is another one around the 22nd and 23rd. The equinox reverses the season of the hemispheres. 🌞🌙

Knowing this, the Catholic Church defined that Easter would be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon of the first equinox of the year.

Therefore:

  • Carnival is celebrated 47 days before Easter
  • Carnival Tuesday is 40 days before Palm Sunday

In the Catholic Church, the Palm Sunday is celebratedseven days before Easter. The date symbolizes the beginning of Holy Week. 40 days before Palm Sunday, therefore, it is Carnival Tuesday.
