This year, trade union centrals are raising the minimum wage as a priority. Another highlight is the end of “extortionate interest rates”, in criticism of the rise in the basic interest rate. The unions also call for an end to wage inequality between men and women, the repeal of part of the labor reform and the defense of public companies against privatization.

Federal District

In DF, trade unions and social movements will hold two Labor Day celebrations.

The Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT-DF) and the Workers' Party (PT) called for a political-cultural event at the Feira Central square in Ceilândia, the most populous administrative region of the DF.

“The choice of Ceilândia as the place to celebrate the date was not by chance. In addition to concentrating thousands of workers ─ which brings the CUT and affiliated unions even closer to the base ─ the city played a fundamental role in the construction of Brasília and, over the years, consolidated itself as one of the main centers of social movements, culture, arts and resistance in the DF”, explained the entity.

The other centrals, such as Trabalhadores do Brasil, Força Sindical, CSP Conlutas and CSB, in partnership with left-wing parties and social movements, celebrate the 1st of May unified at block 108, in Eixão Norte, central region of the capital. The agenda includes the demand for the end of the Central Bank's current interest rate policy, the redefinition of Petrobras' role and more investments in economic and social infrastructure.

May 1st is considered the great date of the workers' struggle around the world. It is a tribute to the martyrs of Chicago, workers sentenced to death for carrying out a strike to reduce working hours in 1886.

In Brazil, according to the CTB, the first celebration of May 1st was in 1892, in Porto Alegre, a year after the decision of the Second Socialist International to establish the date as International Workers' Day.
