“Chloroquiners” and the ballot box: 6 defenders of ineffective treatment against covid-19 were failed in the elections

They gained prominence by defending scientifically disapproved treatments to deal with Covid-19, such as the use of chloroquine and ivermectin. They had their moment of fame - mainly because they were linked to President Jair Bolsonaro's (PL) propaganda for the indiscriminate use of medicines. But, at the polls, the speech was rejected: six of these controversial figures were not successful in this Sunday's elections (2).

According to the website Congresso em Foco, doctors Mayra Pinheiroe Nise Yamaguchi, were unable to be elected as federal deputies. The two promoted the use of chloroquine to reduce the effects of covid-19 and were mentioned in the final report of the Covid CPI.

Mayra She became known as “captain chloroquine” and, with that catchphrase, she joined the PL, Bolsonaro's party, to seek a place in the Chamber of Deputies for Ceará. She received 71.214 votes and was unable to be elected, although she remains as a substitute. The CPI requested that the doctor be indicted for an epidemic resulting in death and crimes against humanity.

In fact, the title of doctor weighed against science-denying candidates: Roberta Lacerda, member of the PL, was another defender of ineffective treatment for Covid-19 who lost in her attempt to reach Congress: she ran for Rio Grande do Norte but received 14.407 votes. The infectious disease specialist, who has already had her social media account suspended for spreading misinformation.

Nise Yamaguchi, who starred in one of the most tense moments between the clashes in the Covid CPI – ran in the elections for federal deputy for São Paulo, for Pros. She received 36.690 votes, which were not enough to elect her. She faces an indictment for an epidemic resulting in death. Her name was mentioned on Twitter among the great exespoebefore those on the right who failed to get elected:

Raíssa Soares (PL-BA) and Maria Emília Gadelha (PRTB-SP) were also unsuccessful in the elections. According to Congresso em Foco, Raíssa became known when she recorded a video asking the federal government to send the “covid kit” to Salvador when he was Porto Seguro Health Department (BA). She ran for the Senate and came in third place, with 1.057.085 votes (14,61%).

Maria Gadelha – who gained fame by making lives criticizing the vaccine and being against the vaccine passport – he ran for a seat in the Chamber for São Paulo and received 14.131 votes.

The infectious disease specialist Edimilson Migowski (PL-RJ) also took a fall when trying to be elected to the Chamber in Rio de Janeiro, receiving 9.927 votes. The infectologist advocated the use of vermifuge to treat Covid-19 patients.
