With vaccination low, cases of Influenza increase among children and fill hospitals

Despite the extension of the national flu vaccination campaign, with doses for any age, Brazil was unable to reach the targets for immunizing the target audience against the Influenza virus, not even for children aged six months to 5 years. The result? Emergency rooms in hospitals full of care related to flu syndromes.

Data Influenza Panel, updated daily by the Ministry of Health, indicate that only 67,6% of children between 6 months and 5 years were immunized against the 2022 virus. The goal is to vaccinate around 95%.

The demand in reference children's hospitals in the state of São Paulo, such as Darcy Vargas and Cândido Fontoura, has increased by around 20% in the last 30 days, according to the State Department of Health. Vaccination coverage for children in the state is 65,6%. Between January and September this year, 690 cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) due to Influenza were reported in children up to 11 years old – among them, 189 were in September, in São Paulo alone.

O Rio de Janeiro didn't vaccinatein half of the children up to 5 years old (45,3%) and was only behind Acre (34,9%) and Roraima (31,8%), all with very low rates.

Seasonality

One of the possible explanations for the Influenza outbreaks that are happening in São Paulo is that the circulation of the virus no longer follows the seasonality that we were used to before the pandemic. In the last two years, with social isolation, use of masks and other preventive measures, the circulation of the Influenza virus and other respiratory viruses has dropped considerably. With the return of normality and the end of protective measures, other respiratory viruses begin to circulate again, causing new outbreaks.

According to data from the InfoGripe bulletin, released by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) for the period up to the month of September, there is a trend towards stability in the circulation of respiratory viruses in the country, but with an increase in cases of Influenza A in São Paulo and the District Federal, which could impact other states. In São Paulo, the report highlights the growth in cases only among children and adolescents.
