Meet Wellington Dias, the new Minister of Social Development

José Wellington Barroso de Araújo Dias, better known as Wellington Dias, was appointed by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) as Minister of Social Development. He has already governed the state of Piauí for four terms and was elected senator in 2022. Find out more about him!

He is from Oeiras, Piauí. He graduated in literature from the Federal University of Piauí and specialized in public policy and government from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

The future Minister of Social Development began his political career by participating in his university and, at the same time, he also participated in trade union movements.

In 1985, at the age of 23, Wellington Dias He joined the Workers' Party (PT) and in 1992 was elected councilor of Teresina.

In 1994, he resigned from his position to run for a seat in the state Legislative Assembly. He was elected as a state deputy and was the first president of the Piauí Human Rights Commission.
