World Cup in Qatar: 5 tourist attractions to visit in Doha

Every four years, we relive the joy of supporting our country and watching the Brazilian team's games together with family and friends. But, far beyond sport, the competition also moves the host country's tourism market. After all, if you're already in the country to support, why not discover the most interesting things there? With that in mind, the Curto prepared a selection of 5 tourist attractions worth visiting in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

Al Corniche

It is a seaside promenade that stretches for seven kilometers along the Bay of Doha. In addition to being a tourist attraction, it is also a form of leisure for locals in the capital. Al Corniche is surrounded by skyscrapers and other interesting tourist attractions, such as the Museum of Islamic Art.

Due to the high temperatures and low humidity, it is recommended that the tour along Al Corniche be taken in the late afternoon and early evening – also to watch the beautiful golden sunset that reflects on the tall buildings in the surrounding area.

Imam Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque

Visit the Catar it also means immersing yourself in a culture different from that of Brazil. The country has Islam as its official religion, so visiting Islamic temples is part of tourism. The most famous is the Imam Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque, also known as the Qatar State Mosque. 

It was built in traditional Arabic style, but with modern features – after all, it was inaugurated in 2011. The temple can accommodate up to 30 thousand people.

Museum of Islamic Art

Located at one of the ends of Al Corniche, the Museum of Islamic Art was built on an artificial island and opened in 2008. It has 45 thousand square meters, five floors and a curation of works that present more than 14 centuries of Islamic art to its visitors . 

The museum has undergone a series of renovations to cater to tourists who will visit Qatar during the World Cup. The renovations provided better accessibility and an improved educational environment, including digital presentations.

In addition to the museum, the complex also includes a park, workshops, library and a restaurant run by chef Alain Ducasse.

Souk Waqif

Souqs are very traditional markets in Arab countries. In Doha, the capital of Qatar, the most famous is Souq Waqif, which sells traditional clothes, spices, handicrafts and souvenirs. The place also houses restaurants and hookah lounges – a type of pipe used to smoke tobacco and very common in Eastern culture. 

The building was founded more than a century ago and is located close to a river, which facilitated the exchange of goods. 

The Pearl

The Pearl is truly a gem! The artificial island is complete: it has residential towers, a marina to accommodate luxury boats, shops, hotels, starred restaurants and squares. It is often even described as the “Arabian Riviera”.

It is considered one of the largest real estate developments in the region – in addition to being extraordinary for lovers of engineering and architecture. The name is based on the history of the place, as Qatar was one of the largest pearl exporters in the world.
