Analysis: Have a good holiday, without violence and without scams

There is less than a month until the first round of the election. And, as always happens every two years, we are also on the eve of the September 7th holiday, Independence Day. This time, however, instead of discussing what to do on the holiday or even its meaning - after all, it is the bicentenary of Dom Pedro I's cry - we are worried about possible violent incidents in the streets and even coup intentions of Jair Bolsonaro and his most radical followers. This tension shows the profound degradation of the democratic environment in Brazil, built after the sad years of military dictatorship, which lasted until the early 80s.

Instead of focusing on discussions to get Brazil out of the hole – yesterday (September 5th), for example, was Amazon Day –, we are being bombarded with empty speeches, populist nostalgia, fake news and intolerance.

“Ah, but every campaign is like that, it’s naive to think of something rich in content and purpose…” This condescension is what drives us away. We can and must demand from those who propose to lead or legislate in this country the minimum of commitment, of proposals. It's our responsibility.

And being fair here, and before the usual sealers appear, there are candidates for all levels who have made an effort to be purposeful and coherent with the responsibility they seek. But they are swallowed up by general mediocrity.
