Daniela do Waguinho: who is the Minister of Tourism in the new Lula government?

Daniela Carneiro, also known as Daniela do Waguinho, was chosen by President Lula to head the Ministry of Tourism in the PT member's third term. Find out more about Daniela's political career and recent controversies.

Who is Daniela do Waguinho?

  • 2003: worked at the Municipal Education Department of the city of Rio de Janeiro;
  • 2017 to 2018: she was Secretary of Social Assistance and Citizenship of Belford Roxo in the first term of her husband, Waguinho, mayor of the city;
  • 2019 to 2022: held the position of federal deputy for Rio de Janeiro (she received the most votes from her party, the Brazilian Democratic Movement);
  • 2022: was re-elected federal deputy for União Brasil;
  • 2023: took over the Ministry of Tourism.

Right at the beginning of the Lula government, the minister was accused of having an alleged link with militiamen. In the 2022 elections, Daniela do Waguinho would have received support from militia families in Rio de Janeiro. The first highlight of support was from former councilor Giane Prudêncio, wife of Juracy Alves Prudêncio, known as Jura – convicted and imprisoned for leading a militia in Baixada Fluminense for at least four years. The former councilor campaigned for Daniela in 2018 and 2022. This connection was highlighted on social media as a demonstration of the Waguinho family's proximity to militias in the region.
