State of emergency declared across Peru due to violent protests

The new Peruvian government declared, this Wednesday (14), a state of emergency throughout the country for 30 days to contain the violent demonstrations demanding immediate general elections and the release of deposed president Pedro Castillo, after his failed self-coup.

“It was agreed to declare a state of emergency for the entire country, due to vandalism and violence, the seizure of roads and roads (…), which are being controlled by the National Police and the Armed Forces”, announced the Minister of Defense, Alberto Otárola .
