Defender of Bahia repudiates xenophobic speech by councilor; Psol calls MP and asks for punishment

The Public Defender's Office of Bahia issued a note of repudiation against councilor Sandro Fantinel (Patriotas), from Caxias do Sul, who advised producers in the region not to hire Bahians to work in the state's wineries, in addition to saying they are used to "living on the beach playing the drum." The councilor's xenophobic attitude was accompanied by criticism against the operation that freed 208 workers in a situation similar to slavery in the outsourced harvest of grapes that supply wineries such as Aurora, Cooperativa Garibaldi and Salton.

“Betraying the mandate he exercises on behalf of the people in their plurality, this Tuesday, February 28th, the aforementioned councilor used the pulpit of the Chamber of the city of Rio Grande do Sul to insult and defame the very citizens he should well represent, who, as a whole, they constitute the Brazilian people, who are one, regardless of their origin or color”, states the public defender of Bahia through the note in repudiation of the attitudes of councilor Sandro Fantinel (Patriotas).

The three companies hired an outsourced company, which used slavery-like labor to harvest the grapes, in the Serra do Rio Grande do Sul .

In a statement, the companies stated that they were unaware of the irregularities and had always acted within the law.
