For experts interviewed by AFP, the expectation is that Haddad will promote an increase in public spending and a larger State with an important role for public companies. However, an excessive increase in spending would increase debt and inflation, warn analysts.

During the inauguration ceremony as Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad said that the “irresponsible” increase in expenditure and some tax waivers promoted by the previous government would total a R$300 billion hole in the public coffers, but that this will be reviewed by the current government.

He added that he will send to the National Congress a proposal for measures aimed at increasing investor and citizen confidence in economic policy. For the minister, in addition to working to recover public accounts, it will be necessary to combat inflation and make the country grow again with sustainability, responsibility and mainly with social priority, generating “jobs, opportunities, income, decent wages, food in worker’s table and fairer prices.”
