France creates fund to defend the rights of LGBTQIA+ people around the world

France has created a fund of US$2,1 million (R$10,1 million, at current exchange rates), which its embassies will use to defend the rights of LGBTQIA+ people around the world, Chancellor Catherine Colonna announced this Monday- fair (18).

“It was the first time that a French Foreign Minister participated in this group,” said spokeswoman Anne-Claire Legendre.

This week, Colonna participates in the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, which brings together more than 140 world leaders in New York from September 18th to 24th.

The 2 million euro fund is intended for French embassies so that they “can support those who defend diariathroughout the world the rights of LGBT+ people, sometimes putting their lives at risk,” the spokeswoman added.

This Monday, France reiterated “its commitment to the universal decriminalization of homosexuality and to defending the rights of LGBT+ people”.

In October 2022, France appointed Jean-Marc Berthon as ambassador for the rights of LGBTQIA+ people, something unprecedented in the country's diplomacy.
