Crisis office will monitor the case of indigenous people murdered in Bahia

The Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sônia Guajajara, created a crisis office to monitor the case of two indigenous people of the Pataxó ethnic group who were killed in the extreme south of Bahia last Tuesday (17).

According to preliminary information from the Civil Police, Samuel Cristiano do Amor Divino, aged 25, and Nawir Brito de Jesus, aged 17, were shot in Itabela. The Barra Velha Indigenous Land is located in the region, a site of intense conflicts with farmers.

Shortly after the news of the murder, Sonia Guajajara said that he requested the Ministry of Justice and Public Security to send the National Force to the location.

The president of the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (Funai), Joenia Wapichana, also called for measures to protect the region's indigenous people. 

The Bahia Civil Police reported that it has reinforced the teams working on investigations. Police are searching for witnesses and images that could help identify those responsible for the murder.
