The operation took place in September, after Gal performed at the Coala Festival, in São Paulo. The singer already had a schedule scheduled for the As Various Pontas de Uma Estrela tour, which was supposed to take place in December and January 2023.

Born on September 26, 1945, in Salvador, Bahia, Maria das Graças Penna Burgos was the daughter of Arnaldo Burgos and Mariah Costa Penna. Her connection with music came from working as a clerk in a record store.

In the 1960s, she met João Gilberto, who classified her as the “greatest voice in Brazil”. At this stage, she started to have contact with her great partners, Maria Bethânia, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil.

Soon after the announcement of Gal's death, several demonstrations began to be made on social media. Among them, those of Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Lulu Santos and that of president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In one of Gal's last posts on her Instagram account, shortly before the second round elections, she appears acting as “him”, showing her support for Lula.

Gal leaves behind her son Gabriel, 17 years old. He was adopted when he was 2 years old, after the singer met him in a shelter in Rio. Motherhood, according to Gal, completely changed his life. “I do everything for him and for him,” she said in one of her interviews. In another, she confesses her desire to be a grandmother. “Gabriel will be a great father,” she says.
