British government praises journalist Arman Soldin's 'vital' role in Ukraine

The British government praised this Wednesday (10) the "vital" role that Arman Soldin, an AFP journalist killed in an explosion in Ukraine, played in covering the conflict since the start of the Russian offensive more than a year ago.

“Arman was a talented and brave journalist,” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s press spokesman said, “and his death is obviously devastating to those who knew him.”

“Journalism continues to shine a light on the darkness of this war, and Arman’s work was vital to that,” he said.

He added that “it is clear that any death in this unnecessary invasion is tragic and our condolences remain with all those who lost loved ones during the conflict.”

Soldin, 32, and his AFP companions were attacked by Grad rockets on Tuesday (9) while they were with Ukrainian troops near Chasiv Yar, in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.

The video coordinator died when a rocket landed near where he was standing. The rest of the team was unharmed.

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, a staunch supporter of Ukraine and its president Volodimir Zelensky, paid his own tribute to Soldin.

“It is devastating to hear of Arman Soldin’s death and I send my condolences to his family, friends and colleagues,” the former journalist tweeted.

Johnson argues that “it is a reminder of the mortal danger faced by journalists covering conflicts around the world”.

Soldin, who had worked at AFP since 2015, worked in the agency's London office before joining a special team to cover the war in Ukraine.

The London Foreign Press Association said it was “deeply shocked and saddened” by his death.
