Ukrainian government announces violent fighting in almost the entire Kherson region

Violent fighting between Ukrainian forces and the Russian army was recorded in almost the entire occupied region of Kherson, southern Ukraine, where Kiev's troops began a counteroffensive, the Ukrainian presidency reported on Tuesday (30).

“Throughout the day (Monday) and the entire night, powerful explosions were recorded in the Kherson region. Intense fighting takes place across almost the entire territory of the region,” the presidency said in a statement released on Tuesday morning.

“The Ukrainian Armed Forces began offensive actions in several directions,” adds the note, which cites the destruction of some “ammunition depots and all major bridges” that allowed vehicles to cross the Dniepr River.

Ukrainian authorities announced on Monday the start of a counteroffensive in this southern region of the country, occupied by Russia since the start of the conflict in February, to regain control of the city of Kherson, which had 2 inhabitants before the war.

The region, essential for Ukrainian agriculture, is also strategic because it borders the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in March 2014 and used as a base for the invasion.

Russia, however, said on Monday that it had thwarted Ukrainian offensives in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.

It was not possible to verify the Russian and Ukrainian claims with independent sources.
