Climate activists are arguing that villages near the site should not be demolished and that the coal beneath them should be left in the ground. Furthermore, they argue that burning coal causes emissions of greenhouse gases.

the arrest of Greta Thunberg occurred during the protest at the Garzweiler 2 opencast coal mine – which is about 9 kilometers from Luetzerath. The activist reportedly sat with a group of protesters near the edge of the mine.
