Lula's GSI: find out who Gonçalves Dias is, head of the Institutional Security Office

Marco Edson Gonçalves Dias, known only as Gonçalves Dias, is a reserve general in the Brazilian Army and chief minister of the Institutional Security Office in Lula's third government. He checks out a profile of the name chosen by the president to command the GSI.

Who is Gonçalves Dias?

  • 1969: joins the Army through the Army Cadet Preparatory School;
  • 1999 2001 to: headed the 6th Military Region, in addition to commanding the 19th Motorized Infantry Battalion, based in São Leopoldo;
  • 2003 to 2009: acts in President Lula's personal security during his first two terms;
  • 2011: was head of the Institutional Security Coordination in Dilma Rousseff's government, when he was promoted to general;
  • 2023: takes over as head of the Institutional Security Office.

What is the role of the Institutional Security Office?

The department is responsible for coordinating the government's intelligence area. It is up to the GSI, for example, to monitor issues with “potential risk” to institutional stability, ensure the personal security of the President of the Republic and prevent crises. (G1)
