Instability in Peru: demonstrations have already left two dead

With stones, sticks and burning tires, hundreds of protesters block the runway at Arequipa airport, Peru's second largest city, to demand the resignation of new president Dina Boluarte and early presidential and legislative elections. The announcement made by Boluarte, in the early hours of this Monday (12), that she will present a bill to Parliament to bring forward the elections, from April 2026 to April 2024, did not calm the protesters. Since Sunday (11), protests have increased in several cities across the country, leaving two protesters dead and some injured.

On the streets of several cities in Peru, a crowd demands the release of the now former president Pedro Castillo, as well as the closure of Parliament and new elections now. Castle He is detained by order of a judge, after his failed coup attempt last Wednesday (7) and subsequent dismissal by Congress. He was replaced by the vice president, Dina Boluarte.

In the early hours of this Monday (12), boluarte said that he will try to “reach an agreement with Congress” to bring forward the general elections to April 2024. He also announced that he was declaring a state of emergency in areas of the country that are experiencing violent protests.

“Indefinite strike”

Meanwhile, rural unions and organizations representing indigenous peoples called for an “indefinite strike” from Tuesday (13) in support of Castle, who comes from a peasant family.

They demand the suspension of Congress, the holding of early elections and a new Constitution, as well as the immediate release of Castle, according to a statement from the Peruvian Agrarian and Rural Front, which brings together around a dozen organizations.

At the same time, controversy is growing over the version of a former chief of staff and the Castle that the former president was drugged when he read the message announcing his failed coup attempt.

Hasty judgment

Dominated by the right, the Peruvian Congress approved in the early hours of this Monday (12) a rule that allows the acceleration of a criminal trial against Castle. He was detained by his own security team as he headed to the Mexican embassy to request political asylum. The Public Prosecutor's Office accuses him of rebellion and conspiracy. He was already being investigated for corruption.
