Brazil-Israel Institute repudiates teacher's Nazi salute and warns of growing wave in Brazil

The Brazil-Israel Institute (IBI) released a note repudiating the Nazi gesture made by a teacher from Ponta Grossa, Paraná, and also warning of the dangerous growth of this type of occurrence in Brazil. The images went viral on social media this Monday (10). The video shows the teacher wearing the colors of the Brazilian national flag, raising her arm in the traditional greeting of supporters of Adolf Hitler, the Nazi leader responsible for the Holocaust. After negative repercussions, the school says it will fire the employee.

In its expression of repudiation, the Brazil-Israel Institute states that the case exemplifies the warnings “that neo-Nazi incidents have grown in Brazil in recent years, whether against Jews or other groups, such as black people and LGBTQIA+ people”.

“We cannot normalize situations like this, even if they are exceptions. The process of acceptance, without any punishment, makes more people feel comfortable committing the crime of apologizing for Nazism.”

In the video, reported by Forum Magazine and by Mídia Ninja, the teacher appears displaying the yellow-green colors, raising her arm in an attitude similar to the followers of Adolf Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany, in the traditional ultra-right-wing nationalist greeting.

According to the Forum Magazine report, the teacher has also been photographed wearing buttons supporting the president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

“We view with immense concern the case of the teacher who reproduced the Nazi salute at a school in Ponta Grossa, Paraná. The case exemplifies warnings that neo-Nazi incidents have grown in Brazil in recent years, whether against Jews or other groups, such as black people and LGBTQIA+ people.

We cannot normalize situations like this, even if they are exceptions. The process of acceptance, without any punishment, makes more people feel comfortable committing the crime of apologizing for Nazism.

In the case of the school, the board didn't even explain what the teacher's punishment would be, they just said they didn't agree with the attitude. It is necessary to take tougher measures to stop the rise of neo-Nazism, which is growing quickly and dangerously in our country. A rigorous investigation of the facts is expected.”

We always try to remain neutral and this is the guidance that the school gives to students, parents and teachers. The school’s position is completely contrary to what happened”, stated the Sister Edites, director of the school, told Forum Magazine.

“It was certainly an act of recklessness on the part of the teacher and the school has already taken the first internal measures with her in accordance with our rules”, he concluded.

After the negative repercussion and manifestation of entities, the school decided to give a tougher response and reported that it repudiates the act, classified as “recklessness, carelessness and a big mistake on the part of the teacher”, in the words of the general director, sister Edites Bet, who stated that the school decided to fire the professional.
