Journalists from the largest US media group go on strike

Hundreds of journalists from the largest press group in the United States, Gannett, declared a strike across the country this Monday (5), accusing the management of destroying local newsrooms.

Participating in the strike, which will last one to two days, are employees of several Gannett newsrooms, the NewsGuild-CWA union said in a statement.

The strike affected publications in more than six states across the country, including California, Texas, Florida (southeast), New Jersey and New York (east), the union added.

Gannett owns more than 200 daily newspapers across the country, including USA Today, The Palm Beach Today and The Arizona Republic.

The group was purchased in November 2019 by New Media Investment Group, also known as GateHouse Media, for around 1,2 billion dollars (approximately R$5,9 billion).

Since the merger, newsrooms “have emptied out, local news coverage has declined and Gannett stock prices have fallen nearly 70%,” the NewsGuild-CWA said.

The union blamed executive director Mike Reed for “mismanagement” that “demoralized newsrooms and made it impossible for reporters to have the resources to produce quality journalism.”

Gannett cut nearly 20% of its journalistic work last year, instituted unpaid furloughs and suspended the company's contributions to retirement schemes, the union said.

The union asked the shareholder meeting at Gannett headquarters in Virginia on Monday to approve a motion of censure against Reed.

Journalist positions in U.S. newsrooms declined from 114.000 to 85.000 between 2008 and 2020, according to a 2021 Pew Research Center study.
