List that prohibits fishing for spotted fish will be reevaluated

One of the most popular fish in Brazilian cuisine, the painted fish was almost banned from being fished and led to the postponement of the list of endangered species.

The Ministry of the Environment decided to postpone the validity and reevaluate the country's new list of endangered species, after the inclusion of some fish was questionadopted by state governments and fishing entities. Among them is the pintail, one of the river fish most consumed by Brazilians and highly valued by professional fishermen.

According to the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), experts are studying the possibility of allowing fishing in regions where the fish are not under imminent threat.

The painted fish is also highly coveted by sport fishermen, who drive tourism in several states. Mainly in Mato Grosso do Sul, the place where fishing associations were most mobilized.

The suspension will be valid until December 5th, coinciding with the beginning of the closed season, when fishing is suspended for fish reproduction.
