Berlin's largest aquarium explodes; see video

This Friday morning (16), the glass of a cylindrical aquarium in Berlin, Germany, which claims the title of the largest in the world, burst.


Some of the 1.500 exotic fish that lived in the tank spilled into the lobby of the hotel where the aquarium was located. The causes of the incident have not yet been identified. In addition to the hotel lobby, the fish also reached a busy avenue in the city.

The aquarium is called AquaDom and had around 1,5 million liters of water. According to Berlin police, two people were injured by shattered glass, but not seriously. Firefighters who searched the scene said there were no other victims of the incident.

The aquarium was inside a hotel in one of the city's busiest neighborhoods, Mitte. In addition to the hotel, the complex houses a museum, shops and restaurant.

Fish and debris took over the space and the avenue close to the complex, which was closed.

350 guests who were next to the aquarium were removed from the site and taken to buses that served as temporary shelter. The region is recording low temperatures this Friday, of around 7ºC.
