Meta is sued for 'turning a blind eye' to human trafficking on Facebook and Instagram

A lawsuit filed by shareholders accuses board members of Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, of shirking their duties by ignoring human and sexual trafficking on the technology giant's social networks.

The action asks that Mark Zuckerberg and other executives and board members are ordered to institute reforms and pay compensation.

“Over the last decade, Meta applications have helped, supported and facilitated the work of criminals responsible for pimping, human trafficking and crimes against minors that occur on a large scale on platforms” from the Californian group, points out the complaint filed on Monday in a Delaware court.

“Substantial evidence shows that the board of directors turned a blind eye, despite being aware of this booming phenomenon”, claim the plaintiffs, including the Rhode Island State Employees' Retirement System, the Kiwi Investment Management Wholesale Core Global Fund and the Teamsters Pension Fund, according to the process.

Mark Zuckerberg, executive president and majority shareholder of Meta, is the main target of the process. When contacted by AFP, spokesman Andy Stone stated that the company “clearly prohibits the exploitation of human beings and the sexual exploitation of children”, and that the complaints do not reflect "the efforts" da empresa “to combat this type of activity”.

The lawsuit claims, however, that Meta's board of directors “failed to explain how it tries to eradicate the problem”, which is why the only “logical conclusion” is that “consciously decided to allow Meta platforms to promote and facilitate” these types of trafficking.

Meta faces several accusations, in particular involving effects on the mental health of children and adolescents.
