Woman who inspired film 'Viva – A Vida É Uma Festa' dies at 109

The woman who inspired the character Mamá Coco (abuelita) from the film "Viva" in the celebrated film produced by Pixar studios and winner of the Oscar for best animation in 2017, died on Sunday, Mexican authorities reported.

“I deeply regret the passing of Dona María Salud Ramírez Caballero, 'Mamá Coco', tireless woman and example of life, who was the inspiration for this beloved character who traveled around the world”, stated Roberto Monroy, Secretary of Tourism of Michoacán ( west), Mexican's home state.

According to the local press, Dona María turned 109 in September and died in her hometown of Santa Fe de la Laguna, famous for the traditional celebration of the Day of the Dead.

After the success of the film, which portrays the Mexican festival, Dona Maria became a celebrity and several tourists asked for photos with her.

“Viva – Life is a Party” tells the story of a boy who embarks on a fantastic journey into the world of the dead to meet his ancestors, in particular his great-great-grandfather, Mamá Coco’s father.
