Netflix Top 10: understand how streaming films and series are ranked

You've certainly already taken a peek at Netflix's Top 10, right? The list of films and series is right on the platform's home page and highlights the most watched productions on streaming in a given period - but do you know how this ranking is made? O Curto explain!

Netflix Top 10 Methodology

The Top 10 of Netflix It's a weekly ranking. Every Tuesday, the streaming service updates four lists:

ADVERTISING

  • Film in English
  • Non-English film
  • English TV Series
  • Non-English language TV series

These lists are a ranking of productions in number of hours watched weekly, considering the total hours that users around the world watched each title from Monday to Sunday of the previous week.

In the case of series, seasons are considered. This way, it is possible for the same series to occupy more than one position in the ranking (example: seasons 1 and 2 of Stranger Things).

As productions can enter and leave the ranking, Netflix also provides the total number of weeks that a particular season of series or film was on the list. This is also important in the case of titles that go viral months (or even years) after their release – as was the case of The Crown, which returned to the rankings after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Finally, Netflix also has a general ranking in which it evaluates the most watched productions in their first 28 days on the platform. Recently, the series Dahmer: An American Cannibal made the list by becoming the second most watched series in English on Netflix. The production had more than 701 million hours shown on October 11th.
