The attack by a Bolsonaro deputy against journalist Vera Magalhães

Bolsonaro deputy Douglas Garcia (Republicans) attacked journalist Vera Magalhães with the same words as President Jair Bolsonaro, who said in the TV Band debate that Vera was "a disgrace to journalism".

On Tuesday night (14), there was a debate between the candidates for the government of the State of São Paulo, carried out by UOL in partnership with the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo and TV Cultura. Minutes after the end of the broadcast, state deputy Douglas Garcia (Republicans), who was in the delegation of Tarcísio de Freitas, from the same party, went to journalist Vera Magalhães to record, with his cell phone, a verbal attack against her.

In the attack, the deputy used words similar to those already spoken by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). Garcia said that the Roda Viva presenter is “a disgrace to journalism”, in addition to questionshow the presenter's salary. In March 2020, the deputy had published false information about Vera's remuneration on TV Cultura, as pointed out by Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abrajo) in a note this Wednesday.

The director of Journalism at TV Cultura, Leão Serva, who mediated the debate, took Garcia's cell phone and threw it away. Garcia started shouting “journalists” and was expelled by security.

Vera stated that she would file a police report against the deputy and said that she had to leave the Memorial da América Latina with an escort.

The journalist also said that the candidate went to the place with the intention of attacking her, as he published a photo questionI wonder if I would find her.

Tarcísio de Freitas, a candidate who receives support from Jair Bolsonaro, criticized his colleague's attitude and said that this type of thing is “incompatible with democracy”.

This morning, the deputy published a video saying that he filed a police report against Vera Magalhães and Leão Serva, for “slander and defamation”. The parliamentarian also said that he owes Tarcísio de Freitas an apology.
