WHO denounces attacks on monkeys in Brazil

The World Health Organization lamented the attacks suffered by monkeys in Brazil and reinforced that current outbreaks of monkeypox occur through transmission between humans.

This Tuesday (09), the World Health Organization (WHO) lamented reports of attacks against primates in Brazil, driven by fear of monkeypox, and insisted that current outbreaks are due to human-to-human transmission.

At a press conference in Geneva, WHO epidemiologist Margaret Harris reinforced that monkeypox received its name only because it was first identified in primates.

“People need to know that the transmission we are seeing now is between humans,” said Harris.

The epidemiologist also stated that the WHO is evaluating – together with experts – the possible adoption of a new name for monkeypox, after scientists wrote a letter to the organization requesting a new nomenclature “that is neither discriminatory nor stigmatizing”system. (G1)
