UN denounces intimidation and censorship in Russia of opponents of the war in Ukraine

The UN denounced Russia's censorship of the war in Ukraine. Among the points highlighted by the organization is the violation of the right of access to information. The matter will be the subject of debate for a month by the Human Rights Council.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights denounced this Monday (12) the “intimidation” in Russia of opponents of the war in Ukraine, as well as the “forms of censorship” in force in the country.

In Russia, “intimidation, restrictive measures and sanctions against those who express their opposition to the war in Ukraine are undermining the exercise of fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, in particular the rights to freedom of assembly, expression and association”, said Acting High Commissioner Nada Al-Nashif in her opening speech at the 51st session of the Human Rights Council.

“The pressure on journalists, the blocking of resources available on the internet and other forms of censorship are incompatible with the pluralism of the media and violate the right to access to information”, he added.

The war in Ukraine will be one of the topics of debate at the Council's sessions, which will be meeting for a month, from today (12/9) to 7 October.
