The presidential candidates and…. the Savings Bank

In this section, the Curto News opens space for presidential candidates' ideas on a topic that is among the most relevant at the moment. What do the candidates for the most important seat in the country think about Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF)?

What was the reason for choosing this theme? The new crisis of the Jair Bolsonaro government after accusations of harassment against Pedro Guimarães, already former president of the bank – now under the command of Daniella Marques.

Let’s see what the pre-candidates think:

Squid

In an interview with Rádio Educadora de Piracicaba, the former president said: “This privatization thing is a matter of incompetence. I don't know how to govern, I don't know how to make the economy grow, I'm going to sell what I have and I'll have money to spend. Soon I won’t have the money or the companies.’” Opposing the privatization of public companies, the PT member defends the creation of mixed-economy companies, giving Banco do Brasil and Petrobras as examples.

Regarding the recent case of harassment, the candidate said he was not a prosecutor, “nor a police officer”. The speech came after pressure to comment on the allegations.

Simon Tebet

The MDB presidential candidate criticized the PT member's position – or lack thereof – and accused him of machismo. “Unfortunately we have cases and they are not few. Only 15% of women resign, when the aggressor should be fired.”, said Tebet. The competitor, who asked for Guimarães' ''summary dismissal'', announced that she intends to create ombudsman offices for state-owned employees if she is elected.

Regarding the possibility of privatizing the bank, the parliamentarian left the question open. “I agree to discuss. It is no longer a discussion of minimum or maximum state, but it is the Brazilian State working to stop being known as the most unequal country in the world”, said in an interview with R7

Ciro Gomes

Immediate punishment, in addition to removal from office. This is what Ciro Gomes (PDT) asked for, saying that Pedro Guimarães is “a criminal”. Since 2018, his last campaign to Planalto, the Ceará native has been repeating that the Box must remain as is: public. “For me, privatization is a tool. We must celebrate a national development project, the general lines of which I will offer to the people's critical judgment, which will define the role of foreign capital, against whom I have nothing, national capital and state capital”.

Jair Bolsonaro

The Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, defends the privatization of state-owned companies and Bolsonaro does not rule out changing the control of the state-owned company. According to the president, he has not yet been “completely converted to Paulo Guedes, nor is he talking about privatization”, leaving the possibilities if he is re-elected up in the air. Still in the most recent episode of his government, Bolsonaro avoided elaborating on the topic: “He asked to leave.”
