Why will the Amapá government receive tons of oxygen?

Amapá should receive 12 thousand tons of oxygen from the Federal Government by this Tuesday (23) to supply 30 new beds at the University Hospital (HU). The request for reinforcement in hospital supplies was made by the State Government after facing an outbreak of respiratory syndromes and declaring an emergency.

According to the Amapá government, there is no lack of oxygen so far. The requested material, around 12 thousand tons, will be needed to supply new 10 beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 20 clinical beds (in a new hospital unit) that are being opened to deal with health emergencies.

“This Navy ship that is arriving with oxygen tanks is necessary for the new HU beds to start working. Normally it would take more than 45 days to arrive…”, explained the Secretary of Health, Silvana Vedovelli.

“As it is a new hospital, this was an action already foreseen in the planning to expand the unit, but which is being brought forward to support the State's Public Health emergency. The initiative is one of the essential steps to guarantee the opening of new beds seeking to respond to the moment of emergency and is not related to shortages in the local network”, highlighted the former Minister of Health and current president of Ebserh, Arthur Chioro, according to a statement issued on the Amapá government website.

The tanks left the Port of Belém on Sunday night (21) and are scheduled to arrive at the Port of Santana, in Amapá, on Tuesday (23).

Emergency is the result of a flu outbreak due to a drop in vaccination

According to analyzes carried out by the Evandro Chagas Institute, the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Influenza a are circulating in large volumes in the state of Amapá, in addition to a coronavirus that mainly affects babies and children.

“It is not a new virus, but it is circulating very strongly, accompanied by Influenza A, which has been leading to hospitalizations and even deaths. We adopted several measures, we acquired equipment, medicines, respirators, oxygen, we set up a task force to increase the number of beds immediately, going from 85 beds to 249 in one week”, explained Clécio Luís.

Known virus

188 samples collected in suspected cases of respiratory syndromes were sent to the IEC, in Belém. Of the total, 96 (51,06%) tested positive for the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

The disease caused by RSV is known and is one of the main causes of respiratory infections in children, but the virus can also affect people of any age.
