Electricity prices in Germany and France also break new records

Wholesale electricity prices for 2023 in Germany and France broke new records this Friday (26), with 850 and more than 1.000 euros per megawatt-hour (851 dollars and more than 1.001 dollars), respectively.

The explosion in prices – which were around 85 euros per megawatt-hour ($85,1) a year ago – is due, among other reasons, to the reduction in Russian gas shipments to Europe since the war in Ukraine.

Many thermal plants use gas to generate the energy electrical. As the amount of gas available is not certain, prices are at record levels.

In France, the closure of nuclear reactors due to corrosion problems, in particular, also caused record prices. Only 24 of France's 56 reactors are currently operating.

European Union (EU) countries are adopting energy saving plans the energy and rationing – such as turning off illuminated signs at night – due to the risk of blackouts in winter (northern hemisphere).
