Pentagon investigates Russian missile crash in Poland; country is a member of NATO

Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said the US Department of Defense is aware of unconfirmed reports that Russian missiles struck Poland and killed two people. The country is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

If confirmed, this would be the first time since the start of war in ukraine that a missile hits a NATO member country. Moldova, which also borders Ukraine, has reported problems that may have been caused by missiles. The country is experiencing major power outages after attacks knocked out an important power line that supplies the population.

The incidents coincide with a new Russian bombing of a dozen Ukrainian cities, from east to west, including Kiev. According to Ukrainian authorities, the attacks were aimed at energy infrastructure and more than seven million Ukrainians are without electricity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that around 85 missiles were fired at the country.

Ukraine's Energy Minister Herman Haluschenko called the attack the most massive attack on infrastructure since the start of the war and Russia's "vindictive" response to battlefield losses, referring to last week's withdrawal from Kherson. .

The Ukrainian power grid has already been hit by previous attacks that destroyed around 40% of the country's energy infrastructure.

Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller reported that top leaders were attending an emergency meeting of the National Security Council due to a “crisis situation”.
